Travel Accommodations

We quickly decided that when travelling with children we do not like to stay in hotel rooms. Our main reason is that our children don't want to miss out on anything and if we want them to go to sleep then we have to shut off all the lights and go to sleep too or hide out in the bathroom. That is not a vacation to us.
So, a few years ago I found the website that has solved our problem. Are you ready? It's www.vrbo.com and it stands for Vacation Rentals By Owner. Now we are able to stay in a condo or a house for about the cost of a hotel room (depending on the location and season).

Examples:
We rented a 3 bedroom, 2 bath corner condo unit for a week on the beach in Alabama for about $115 a night in March.
We rented a 3 bedroom, 1 bath duplex unit for $80 a night for 2 nights in New Orleans at the end of February.
We rented a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home for a week in the mountains of VA outside Winchester for less than $100 a night.
We just rented a 2 bedroom, 1 bath home in West Chester, PA for our Dutch country trip.

Some of the benefits of renting a condo or house:
1. Kitchen: We are able to save money, time and stress by eating in. We like to eat out for lunch because it's usually cheaper and the kids are in a better mood then we can relax in the evenings and have down time.
2. Washer & Dryer: We try to rent one with a washer & dryer. It is so nice to be able to take home more clean clothes than dirty ones and with kids it helps to be able to wash up messy clothes right away. Plus you can take less.
3. Privacy: In a hotel I worry about bothering other guests, so it's nice to know we aren't disturbing others.
4. Routine: We are able to still do naps and quiet time if we desire and there is still living space for Evan & I to enjoy as well.

We have always had good experiences with renting like this. Sometimes the owner will mail us a key, sometimes they live near by and meet us there and one even had a keypad entry and e-mailed us the code.

BTW, we are also able to travel in the off-season and have found it is much cheaper to travel in the Spring and the weather is still agreeable at that time of year.

Next post: New York City (per a friend's request)- I don't know a lot, but I will share what I know.
